What is the best way to take CBD?

CBD (or cannabidiol), a hemp derived compound that is gaining increasing popularity amongst the health conscious. Product choices are abundant, but how does one choose the most suitable option?

We at Berrybuzz advocate incremental and sustainable lifestyle changes, and therefore, we offer many choices that may suit you best. A key aspect to consider is bioavailability, or the time it takes for the body to take the compound and distribute it throughout our bloodstream before it gets filtered out as waste.

Let’s take a look at the different CBD product options.

Oil / tinctures

This is by far our favourite intake option as it works fast. The best way to take oil is subligually, which is putting the oil under the tongue for 30-60 seconds before swallowing, thus allowing the capillaries there to bypass the digestive system and absorb the compound directly into our bloodstream. This method takes 15-20 minutes to take effect, and product duration is 4-6 hours.

Edibles

This method offers slow release and more comfort to the consumer. As you are eating a gummy / chew / chocolate and so on, the CBD will need to be digested and metabolized in the liver first before it is distributed through the bloodstream. This method takes 0.5 – 2 hours to take effect, and product duration can be hours.

Capsules / soft gels

This is another intake method that requires going through the digestive system, and will take around 1 hour to take effect. Product duration is around 6-12 hours.

Topicals

Topical CBD products work best on localized physical pain only, but will not help with psychological effects. Product duration is around 4-6 hours.

Vaping

Vaping is a very fast way of absorbing CBD. Only 2-10 minutes is needed before you can feel the effect. However, some studies indicate that consistent vaping can cause long term lung damage, and more studies are needed.

A final word on increasing the bioavailability of your CBD intake. CBD is fat-soluble and does not go well with water. That is another reason why many CBD oils / tinctures use coconut  or MCT oil as it actually aids absorption. If you are taking capsules for example, you may want to consider taking it after food.
